Frequently asked questions
How do I know that a play-based approach is for me?
It can feel scary stepping out of the comfort zone of standing at the front of the classroom and delivering a lesson, to being amongst the children who are all on their own tasks. This falls down to pedagogy and understanding what is age-appropriate for children. There is ample research behind why play is needed in KS1, as well as many teacher’s experiences showing how successfully it can be delivered- both are explored in my online course!
What does a play-based classroom look like?
There is no blueprint for exactly how a classroom should look, as at the end of the day, your classroom should reflect the needs of the cildren you teach. However, in a classroom where children learn in continuous provision, there should be a selection of resources, organised clearly and available freely to the children to use however they please. The areas and resources will help children meet the requirements of the National Curriculum as it acts as a teaching tool. You will notice as well that there isn’t a table and chair spot for every child, the classroom will look more open and set up into hubs or zones of learning.
